With her serious love of the environment, actress Shailene Woodley is a true natural wonder.
From Sunset Boulevard shopping sprees to celebrity-packed parties, the glitter and glitz of Hollywood can be alluring (occasionally too much so) to actors. But not for Shailene Woodley–her favorite Los Angeles hangout is located far away from red carpets and paparazzi, up in the mountains. “I love being around trees and going hiking,” says the star of ABC Family’s The Secret Life of the American Teenager. “I’m really into environmentalism–I feel a connection to nature.” She credits this passion with keeping her grounded while trying to make it in showbiz. “As an actor, you probably book only one out of 150 auditions. I never took rejection personally, because acting wasn’t the only important thing in my life,” explains the eighteen-year-old Southern California native. Shailene struck gold when she scored the role of pregnant teen Amy Juergens in Secret Life, but her career will skyrocket next year when she makes her movie debut in The Descendants alongside one of the biggest stars in the world, George Clooney. She says: “George is so down-to-earth! He motivates me to always be myself and never turn into a demanding diva.”
As an outdoorsy girl, Shailene can’t stand being stuck at home primping, so she keeps her beauty regimen short and simple. She prevents breakouts by changing her pillowcase every other day: “The hair products they use on me during shoots can get onto it and clog my pores,” she explains. CoverGirl LashBlast is her top mascara pick and, in keeping with her low-key routine, she carries around Chapstick at all times.
Of course, she always tries to incorporate green ideas into her lifestyle. “When I’m in the shower, I turn off the faucets while I’m washing my body or shaving–I just keep a cup of water there to rinse the razor,” she reveals. Shailene also recently discovered the multitasking benefits of using extra-virgin coconut oil as a body moisturizer. She says, “Not only is it all-natural, but I don’t have to wear a fragrance, because I smell like a yummy macaroon!”
